The Year of the Hangman by Gary L. Blackwood

There is enough action to keep a teen listener interested. This coming-of-age story deals effectively with the themes of honor, war, and loyalty. Eventually, of course, he has a change of heart. Initially Creighton hates the Americans and spies on them for his uncle. Creighton is taken in by the kindly printer Ben Franklin whose print shop puts out a seditious newspaper with the help of a fetching young French girl named Sophie and a stuttering giant of a young man named Peter. Before they reach Florida they are captured by a privateer named Benedict Arnold, who takes them to New Orleans, where the rebels are plotting more military action against the British. Gower had told his sister that her husband died bravely in battle against the rebels but hints that this may not be true. On the ship Creighton learns that there is a mystery surrounding the death of his father. Gower reluctantly accepts the burden of a whiny nephew and takes him along to his new posting in West Florida. Losing patience, his mother has him shipped off to her brother in the Colonies, where she hopes the tough Colonel Gower will straighten Creighton out. Back in England, the Year of the Hangman, 1777, finds the lazy and spoiled 15-year-old Creighton Brown in bad company, drinking and losing money at cards.
